Black Bean Burgers & Sauce

A hit–the sauce really takes these delicious burgers up a notch!

YIELD: 4 burgers, 1 cup sauce

Burger Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 can black beans, rinsed
  • 1/2 of a medium-size yellow onion, finely grated
  • 1/2 cup red pepper, diced
  • 1 cup oats, regular or quick
  • 2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 2 teaspoons A.1. steak sauce
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Burger Sauce Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon chives, finely cut

Burger Instructions

  1. MEASURE the flax seed and water in a small bowl, stir and set aside
  2. ADD the beans to a large bowl. Mash most of the beans with a fork or pastry blender
  3. ADD onion, red pepper, oats, nutritional yeast, salt, pepper, garlic powder and A.1. to the bowl
  4. SCRAPE the flax seed and water mixture in to the bean mixture with a rubber spatula
  5. COMBINE all ingredients with a rubber spatula
  6. FORM into 4 patties on a sheet pan. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside until ready to cook
  7. COOK on a preheated non-stick pan or griddle for 4 minutes per side

Sauce Instructions

  1. COMBINE all ingredients in a small bowl using a whisk
  2. REFRIGERATE until ready to serve
